Orange and Google join forces to deploy a submarine cable that will connect France with the US

The underwater 6.600 km cable will open in 2020 and is one of seven that Google is building over the next two years.

The telecommunications operator Orange is collaborating with the technology company Google in the deployment of the submarine telecommunication cable Dunant, of 6.600 kilometers in length, which will connect the United States with the French Atlantic coast and which plans to start providing services at the end of 2020.

In a statement, the French company has detailed that, as Google's partner in France, it will build and operate the docking station on the country's Atlantic coast and will also be in charge of the network's central connection with Paris. The cable will be the first new submarine cable between the United States and France in 15 years.

The French company, which has investments in more than 40 submarine cables, highlights the benefits of having access to the fiber pairs that will make up the cable and which have a capacity of more than 30 Tbps per pair, "enough to transfer a movie of 1Gb in 30 microseconds».

"This will allow Orange to boost its capacity to meet the massive growth in demand for data and content between Europe and the United States for several years," says the operator, who also adds that it will be in a better position to support the development of new uses for consumers and businesses in Europe and America.

Google builds private cables, the company says, to provide better performance, latency and capacity for its customers in the cloud. In this case, the private construction of the cable allows it to guarantee that its landing points are as close as possible to its Belgian and virgin data centers in the north.

"The role of submarine cables is often overlooked, despite their central role at the heart of our digital world," said Stéphane Richard, Orange's Chairman and CEO. “I am very proud to announce this collaboration with Google to build a new state-of-the-art cable between the United States and France”

Google has seven other cables that will be available online in the next two years, connecting locations such as Hong Kong, Guam, Australia, Ireland, Denmark and California.
